Can you introduce yourself and describe your work in a few words?
My name is Maud Tordjman, and I’ve been a hair and makeup artist for 3 years. I’ve been working in the fashion industry since I was 19. I studied fashion design and modeling before having a 16-year career as a model. After the birth of my first child, I chose to transition into makeup, and I have no regrets at all!
What made you want to become a makeup artist? What training is needed to pursue this career?
I’ve always been very hands-on and comfortable with a brush, pencil, or anything that allows me to create something with my hands. After working with many great hairstylists and makeup artists, I wanted to follow in their footsteps and stay in the world of events and studios where I feel completely at home. I was lucky to train by assisting makeup artist friends and working with big names in hairdressing. As a model, I paid special attention to the makeup and hairstyling techniques used on me. I loved asking questions about the products and techniques, and I think that’s where my desire to turn this into my career came from.
What types of makeup do you get to do?
I mainly work by responding to client requests in the fashion sector, but I also do a lot of bridal makeup. I’ve also had the chance to work on a few film sets and try special effects makeup, which I loved!
What are your strengths as a makeup artist?
I think I understand women in general and their needs very well. I always have a caring eye on each one of them. I love highlighting their best features, boosting their confidence, and making them feel special after they’ve been in my hands.
What do you enjoy the most about your job?
What I love most is that you learn something new every day, and you are constantly evolving in these professions. There are always new techniques to try and fresh inspirations. But it’s also the people I meet, the teams I work with during a photoshoot, where we create beautiful projects together, and when we see the results once the photos are published, it’s incredibly satisfying. Or in a different context, when I receive positive feedback from my wonderful brides with whom I share such meaningful moments—it simply makes me happy.
What cosmetics do you personally use daily?
As a mom of two young children, I tend to keep my makeup routine fairly simple due to lack of time, I must admit: concealer, mascara, loose powder, blush or bronzer, and a brow setting gel.
But the base of any great makeup is a good skincare routine (which varies depending on the season and needs, and right now it’s this one): I never leave the house without a good hyaluronic acid serum (from Clémence et Vivien), followed by a moisturizing cream (Rosé), an eye cream (Embryolisse), and a lip balm (La Neige). I also make sure to wear a touch of perfume, the ultimate touch.
Any beauty advice for our readers?
Never forget to remove your makeup, even when you’re tired. Opt for an oil-based or cleansing milk cleanser and a toner or facial mist. And make sure to nourish your skin with hydration morning and night using products that are suited to your skin type.
How did you discover Maison Catanzaro?
I was first their model before becoming their hair and makeup artist. It’s an experience I’ll never forget!
Do you have any funny anecdotes to share with us?
I met Charlotte on the school benches during our children's first year of kindergarten. She had only seen me in photos for her advertising campaign and had only heard my voice over the phone. When I arrived at school (late for the meeting, coming straight from a photoshoot), my voice caught her attention. We were wearing masks, so she came up to me and asked if I was indeed me. She gave me the chance for a first collaboration as a makeup artist and hairstylist and has trusted me ever since. Let’s just say we make a pretty good team, and it’s always a joy to work for such a beautiful French brand.
