In Spain, wearing a red lingerie set on New Year's Eve is a tradition.
Paula, marketing manager at Maison Catanzaro, is Spanish and tells us more about this ritual.
"Every country has its own traditions for New Year's celebrations. For those who have had the chance to spend the last day of the year in Spain, you may have seen that we eat twelve grapes—each one representing a month of the year—along with the twelve chimes at midnight. In the last minute of the last day of the year, during the final twelve seconds, Spaniards stand in front of their televisions, counting down each chime while swallowing a grape. Starting the year with twelve grapes in your mouth may not be the sexiest thing, but we have another, much more exciting and lesser-known tradition: wearing red lingerie on New Year's Eve!
Yes! Many Spaniards start the year wearing a beautiful red lingerie set. Many believe it is a sign of happiness, fortune, and that it helps kick off the new year on the right foot. This tradition dates back to the Middle Ages in Europe. At that time, the color red was associated with witchcraft, and more neutral clothing was worn. Those who believed that red would bring good luck wore it—but hidden in their underwear. To this day, this belief has persisted, not only in Spain but also in Italy, and many people wear red lingerie on New Year's Eve."
